Savvy Suppers - 3 Dinners for Under $50 in New Zealand
Savvy Suppers - 3 Dinners for Under $50 in New Zealand
Welcome back to another season of SAVVY SUPPERS! If you are new around here, here is how this works. I head to the supermarket, spend under $50, and we make three proper, delicious dinners with leftovers for your lunch, for two to three people. With the price of groceries going up and up and up here in New Zealand, I am on a mission to prove that you can still eat REALLY well without blowing the budget or eating boring food. Every dollar counts and every dinner should be delicious. That is non-negotiable!
This shop came in at $49.33 at New World and I am not going to lie, I was pretty pleased with myself. A bag of pasta, pork mince, cabbage, potatoes, coconut cream, corn chips, frozen vegetables, mushrooms, cheese, sour cream, milk, tomato paste, curry powder, jasmine rice, onions, and a packet of Maggi gravy. Three completely different dinners, all from one trolley, and all under $50.
How Savvy Shoppers Works
The idea is simple. I do one shop, I spend under $50, and from that single shop I make three dinners for two to three people, with enough left over for lunch the next day. I shop at New World and I reach for Pams products wherever I can because the quality is great and the price is right. I also keep an eye on what is on special and what is in season, because that is genuinely one of the easiest ways to keep your grocery bill down without sacrificing flavour.
A note on pantry staples: this shopping list covers all the main ingredients for the three recipes, but I am assuming you have a few basics at home already, things like oil for cooking, salt and pepper, flour or cornflour, and any dried spices you might already have in the cupboard. If you are starting from scratch on your pantry, the first shop might cost a little more, but once those basics are stocked you will find your weekly shop gets cheaper and cheaper.
The Full Shopping List
Here is exactly what I bought, and what I paid at New World on 14 April 2026. Prices will vary depending on what is on special, what is in season, and which New World you shop at, but this gives you a solid starting point.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Zafarelli short pasta | $2.35 |
| Pork mince | $13.59 |
| Cabbage half | $2.79 |
| Onions (0.46kg) | $0.92 |
| Fortune Jasmine rice | $3.29 |
| Pams coconut cream | $1.89 |
| Pams tomato paste | $1.55 |
| Pams curry powder hot | $1.59 |
| Meadow Fresh milk | $1.59 |
| Mexicano corn chips | $3.39 |
| Watties Wok Creations frozen veg | $4.99 |
| Meadow Fresh sour cream | $2.59 |
| Dairyworks Italian cheese blend | $3.95 |
| Mushrooms (0.205kg) | $2.66 |
| Potatoes baking (0.345kg) | $1.20 |
| Maggi Rich Brown Gravy | $0.99 |
| Total | $49.33 |
A few things worth noting about this shop. The pork mince at $13.59 is the biggest spend, but it covers two of the three dinners, which makes it excellent value. The onions and potatoes are sold by weight so you only pay for what you need. Several of the Pams products were on special on the day, which is always worth looking out for. And the frozen Wok Creations vegetables are a brilliant budget staple, a big bag of mixed veg for under $5 that works in everything.

Dinner 1: Curried Pork and Cabbage with Rice
A quick, filling weeknight dinner that is ready by the time your rice is cooked. Half the packet of pork mince, a quarter of the cabbage, the onions, curry powder, and jasmine rice. Minimal ingredients, maximum flavour, and honestly one of those recipes that surprises you every single time with how good it is for how little it costs.

Dinner 2: Creamy Pork Ragu Pasta
Cosy, warming, and rich in a way that feels way more indulgent than the price tag suggests. The other half of the pork mince, mushrooms, tomato paste, that $0.99 packet of Maggi gravy, a splash of milk, and the pasta. Simmer it all together and you have got a proper comforting bowl of food that tastes like it took hours.

A Few Tips for Savvy Shopping
Buy by weight where you can. Onions, potatoes, and mushrooms are all sold by weight at New World, which means you only pay for exactly what you need. No waste, no paying for a bag of six onions when you only need two.
Reach for Pams. Pams is New World's own brand and the quality is genuinely great. Tomato paste, curry powder, coconut cream, all Pams in this shop and all brilliant. It is one of the easiest swaps you can make to bring your grocery bill down.
Watch the specials. Several items in this shop were on special or Clubcard price on the day. Signing up for a New World Clubcard is free and the savings add up fast, especially on proteins and dairy.
Buy what is in season. Cabbage, onions, and potatoes are all classic winter vegetables that are cheap and plentiful right now. Cooking with what is in season is one of the best ways to eat well on a budget.
Stock your pantry basics. Oil, salt, pepper, flour, and a few dried spices will get you through more recipes than you can imagine. Once your pantry is stocked with the basics, your weekly shop gets cheaper and cheaper because you are only topping up the fresh stuff.
